Christchurch Tram guide
Christchurch's heritage trams loop the central city, with the driver giving live commentary as you go. The ticket office at Cathedral Junction is about an 11-minute walk from our motel, so you can leave your car in our free car park and spend the day hopping on and off.

Tickets and prices
These are the prices on the Christchurch Tram website when we checked in October 2026:
- Adult: $42
- Child (5 to 15): $10
- Under 5: free
- Family (2 adults and up to 3 children): $99
A ticket lasts all day, and you can hop on and off as often as you like. Buy it online, on board, or at the ticket office at Cathedral Junction (stop 1). Children must be with a paying adult. Check current prices on the Christchurch Tram website.
Opening times
- Summer (from 28 September): 8.30am to 6.30pm every day
- Winter (from 1 May): 9am to 5pm every day
A tram comes every 10 to 20 minutes. The last tram leaves stop 1 an hour before closing time.
The loop
The full loop takes about 50 minutes and has 18 stops. Along the way you pass the Arts Centre, the Botanic Gardens, Tūranga (the central library), Margaret Mahy Family Playground, The Terrace, Riverside Market, the SALT District and New Regent Street, where the tram runs right through the street.
You can get off at any stop and catch a later tram, so it is an easy way to see the central city in a day.
Getting there from the motel
Stop 1 and the ticket office are at Cathedral Junction, 109 Worcester Street, about an 11-minute walk from us.

Prams and wheelchairs
Two or three small, folded prams fit on each larger tram, but the smaller trams cannot take prams. Two trams can carry up to two manual wheelchairs, using the hoist at Cathedral Junction. Motorised and electric wheelchairs cannot be lifted. Call the tram team on 03 366 7830 on the day to check which trams are running.
The outside seats are not covered, so bring a jacket on a cool day.
Dinner on the tram
The Christchurch Tramway Restaurant serves dinner on a tram as it loops the city. It leaves Cathedral Junction at 7.30pm every day except public holidays, and at 5pm on some dates. You must book ahead. For more ideas, see our guide to places to eat near the motel.
