New Regent Street guide

New Regent Street is a short pedestrian street of pastel shopfronts between Gloucester and Armagh Streets, with the heritage tram running right through it. It is a 10-minute walk from our motel.

A little history

  • The street opened on 1 April 1932, on the site of an old hall called the Colosseum.
  • Architect Francis Willis designed its 40 shops in the Spanish Mission style.
  • Heritage New Zealand lists the shops as a Category 1 historic place, and the whole street as a historic area.
  • Cars have been kept out since 1994.

What to do

  • Browse the small shops and stop at a café or bar.
  • Watch the tram roll through, or catch it here at stop 18. See our Christchurch Tram guide.
  • Margaret Mahy Family Playground is around the corner, and the Isaac Theatre Royal is at the Gloucester Street end. See our Isaac Theatre Royal guide.
