Quake City guide

Quake City tells the story of the Canterbury earthquakes. It is a special exhibition from Canterbury Museum at 299 Durham Street North, on the corner of Armagh Street, and it is about a 10-minute walk from our motel.

What is inside

  • Displays and interactives for all ages
  • First-hand stories from people who lived through the earthquakes, and from the people who came to help
  • A hands-on interactive about liquefaction, when the ground turned to liquid during the shaking

It is a good place to start a visit, because it helps make sense of the rebuilt city you see on your walks.

Opening hours and tickets

When we checked in October 2026, Quake City was open from 10am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day. There is a charge for entry. See the Quake City website for current prices.

Quake City also offers 20% off when you combine your visit with a guided tour of Ravenscar House Museum.
