Christchurch beaches
Christchurch's beaches are long, sandy surf beaches on the east side of the city. New Brighton is about 14 minutes by car from our motel and Sumner about 21 minutes, and city buses go to both. Surf lifeguards patrol the main beaches on weekends from 7 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, and every day from 14 December to 5 February.

Sumner Beach
Sumner is a seaside village where the Avon-Heathcote estuary meets the sea, with the Port Hills behind it. A promenade along the Esplanade joins Sumner Beach to Scarborough Beach. Both are popular for swimming, and surfing and paddleboarding are popular at Scarborough, where learn-to-surf schools set up on the Esplanade.
- Cave Rock (Tuawera): the big rock on the beach. It is what is left of an old lava flow, and its English name comes from the clefts that cut through it. A signal mast went up on top in 1864 to help ships cross the Sumner bar, and the round stone signal station was built in 1898. It is a site of cultural importance to Ngāi Tahu.
- The Esplanade: walk along the sea wall from Cave Rock to Scarborough, past war memorials, Norfolk pines and the Sumner Clock Tower, built in 1935. Scarborough has a playground with a paddling pool.
- Swimming: Sumner has strong rips at times. Swim between the flags when the lifeguards are on (see below).
- Food: The Beach, at 25 Esplanade, is the only beachfront restaurant on Sumner Beach. It is open every day from 9am to 10pm, on its website when we checked in November 2026. Red Snapper sells fish and chips to eat on the beach or at its outside tables, Burger Stop is two minutes' walk from the beach, and the village has ice cream shops.
- Parking and toilets: there is lots of parking, but it gets busy in summer. The toilets are at the Sumner Surf Club, and there are showers.
- Dogs: LAWA's page for Sumner Beach says dogs are not allowed on the beach in the summer months.
- By car: about 21 minutes from our motel. Get directions
- By bus: Route 3 runs from the Bus Interchange to Sumner, through Ferrymead, in about 40 minutes. The Bus Interchange is a 16-minute walk from our motel. See our Bus Interchange guide.
New Brighton Beach
New Brighton is a long, sandy beach with waves, known for its pier and its library with sea views. It is popular for swimming and surfing, and you will often see paddleboarders out on the water.
- New Brighton Pier: walk out over the sea, then along the sand.
- New Brighton Library (Te Kete Wānanga o Karoro): at 213 Marine Parade, beside the pier. It is open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, with public computers and WiFi. These are the hours on the Christchurch City Libraries website when we checked in November 2026.
- He Puna Taimoana hot pools: heated pools right by the pier. See our hot pools guide for prices and session times.
- For children: the beachside playground and splash area.
